Things to Do in Margate, England

There are plenty of things to do in Margate, England. There is also the Margate Museum in a former police station in the old town.

Dreamland amusement park

Dreamland amusement park in Margate was founded in 1863 as a railway station. It was first called Hall by the Sea and soon grew to include rides. In 1919, it was acquired by John Henry Iles, who would go on to open a number of other amusement parks around the world. He changed the name to Dreamland and added rides including the ‘Scenic Railway’ roller coaster. He continued operating the park until 1968.

Iles’ plans to make Dreamland an American style amusement park failed, but it was still very much a Margate institution. The amusement park would have featured a mile-long wooden roller coaster – a first for the UK. During its first three months of operation, 500,000 people rode it. In addition to thrill rides, Dreamland featured an array of pop-up entertainment, year-round live music, and interactive art exhibits. It was even accessible for guests with physical limitations.

Dreamland closed in 2003 but reopened in 2006. In April 2008, it was hit by an arson attack. Local residents and businesses fought to save the amusement park. They began a campaign to restore it, and the Park’s Scenic Railway was restored. In 2014, the Park was reopened as a Vintage Theme Park Extravaganza.

After an 11-year campaign, Dreamland Amusement Park in Margate reopened after a PS18 million restoration. The project was backed by hundreds of campaigners. Now the park is home to seventeen restored vintage rides, a roller disco, pleasure gardens, arcade, restaurants, and the Grade II* listed timber-framed Scenic Railway.
